The 1920’s was a time for re-invention and evolution across the United States. At the close of WWI those returning home were on the look-out for opportunities to build a better life for themselves and their families. Many companies that prospered during the war ended up closing their doors as economic downturn spread throughout all sectors of industry and many people, including ex-servicemen, were left without work. It was during this difficult period that many logging interests committed to expand their workforce, with particular focus on hiring veterans. In 1920 Clark-Ullman Welding Company opened its doors with the primary focus of working on boilers and pressure vessels at the many lumber yards/mills that dotted the landscape of Oregon and Washington.
Thirty-eight years later, in 1958, C H Murphy was founded and provided refractory products and services for boilers in the same market, as well as boilers onboard ships. In 1983 these two companies merged and formed C H Murphy || Clark-Ullman, providing boilermaker and refractory services to the Pacific Northwest and expanding services around the world.
We proudly carry on the legacy of these companies and for the last 100 years C H Murphy II Clark-Ullman has put the spirit of the era in which it was born to use, serving customers all around the world through hard work, innovation, and creativity. Like 1920, the year 2020 is also filled with change; unexpected, disruptive, and perhaps long-lasting.
“When we started the anniversary planning process, we intended to do something representative of how significant an achievement a 100-year anniversary is,” said C H Murphy II Clark-Ullman President and Chief Executive Officer Randy Lederbrand. “We wanted to share our story because we’re proud of our past and wanted to pay tribute to the many people who have contributed so much to this company, allowing us to thrive for a century. Then, in March, the world changed. The current pandemic cannot erase the achievement of 100 years of excellence, but it can alter its celebration. We are grateful to be able to continue to work and honor the past, but this pandemic has made us realize we cannot take tomorrow for granted. As we look forward to our next 100 years, we know that outstanding service to our customers and communities will remain as vital as ever. We have no doubt that for the next 100 years we will continue to provide ‘Solutions Under Pressure.’”
