The smallest Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger we typically build is 4” in diameter while the largest diameter is 144” with tube lengths up 40 feet long.
The lead time for a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger will vary based on its size and the lead time for the materials used to build it. Most of the time the longest lead time material for a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger will be the tubes. The lead time for the tubes are typically eight weeks but can be more than twice that in special cases. We will work with suppliers that also have tubes in stock to fit an expedited lead time request.
The design of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger begins with the customer providing the thermal performance characteristics of the unit. This is completed by filling out our Custom Heat Exchanger Design Sheet, sending us a TEMA sheet or the design data.
The first size specification for a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger is the physical ‘footprint’. This includes the diameter and length of the shell as well as the height, including the legs, if present.
The second specification for a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger that can be used to denote its size is the amount of energy exchanged measured in BTU/h.
To provide you with a custom Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger our sales engineer will ask you to provide a Design Sheet. You may not have all the information asked for but that is okay. Many times, we are able to complete the design process with a partially completed Design Sheet.
Our heat exchanger experts then perform engineering to design both the thermal and mechanical features of the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger and provide you with a TEMA Heat Exchanger Specification Sheet that will show you how the unit will perform. There will also be a GA (General Arrangement) drawing to give you an idea of the footprint of the unit.
Once that is approved, we provide a quote, request a Purchase Order and the fabrication process is off and running.
