C H Murphy||Clark-Ullman’s Boilermakers Field Division in Utah was recently faced with a challenging work environment while welding in the basement of a processing plant. The temperature reached 98 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity hovered at 75%.
The attached photo illustrates the creative and effective solution the team devised. Two flexible ducts were connected to a portable air conditioner and directed to the work site. The temperature was brought down dramatically and allowed our Boilermakers to safely complete the project.
Our Safety Director has developed a policy that is used to protect our workers from the harmful effects of Heat Illness. The three basic tenants of the policy are:
- ACCLIMATION Allow the body time to acclimate to warmer temperature and higher humidity whenever possible.
- HYDRATION Plan ahead and drink clear liquids prior to performing work and often during work.
- DURATION Plan ahead and allow for rest stops during work when warmer temperatures and high humidity exists.
